Heating Snow
2026
Infinite-loop Short Video Series
Heating Snow is a series of infinite-loop short video series that reconstruct AI-generated imagery through the medium of thermal paper. Through this experimental approach, artist Song Lu constructs a slow collapse within the digital era.
In these visuals, the hand performs as both the primordial tool and the interface of human civilization while acting like a magician. It triggers a continuous shifting and restructuring of forms within a snowy landscape. This is a fiction woven from daily memory, imagination, and the collusion between the artist and the algorithm.
The inherent properties of thermal paper developed by heat and faded by light doom this construction to a tragic fate. It compresses the birth and destruction of the image into the same physical dimension. By placing cutting-edge generative technology upon the cheapest and most fragile of materials, the work shifts its focus from the productivity of the algorithm toward its inevitable dissipation. Each frame developed becomes a deduction of disappearance while accelerating its descent into the physical state of Heat Death.

2023
AI-generated Images
Working Women is a collection of images Song Lu created using artificial intelligence to generate. The series work gathers female figures that have existed or been fictionalized in various fields such as ancient myths and history, science and science fiction, Disney classic fairy tales, fashion celebrities, literature, etc. These figures have attracted Song’s attention and held different significance throughout her journey with AI-generated creations. The names, identities, symbols, and representations of women are scattered and hidden within fragments of memory, awakened, flashed, picked up, and gathered into the snowy landscape of the technological image universe, serving as prompts for her image generation creations.

Invisible Women

AI-generated Video
06:09 mins
Invisible Women is an AI-generated video by Multimedia artists Song Lu and Fan Yu of OHuo Studio that explores the interplay of AI data, algorithms, and cultural biases. Using a one-take shot on a minimalist stage, the film presents 34 AI-generated female characters. Despite neutral occupational terms, the AI only produces female figures when explicitly prompted with "female," exposing inherent gender bias. This selective generation highlights the broader erasure of female representations from digital imagery and societal narratives. "Invisible Women" challenges us to rethink and reshape society and data so that overlooked figures are truly recognized.

Snow Drawing

AI-generated Image
Song Lu created using AI generator. However, She found it difficult to define an "artist" identity through AI, as it tended to produce images of older, Western men. This changed when she added prompts for "young" or "female" artists. It's clear that there's a need for more diversity in the art world, and this extends to the language we use to describe artists and their work.

Hum-AI-n
2025
AI-generated Image
Hum-AI-n confronts the threshold where artificial intelligence reconstructs reality and identity, questioning how humans perceive the world through curated memory data while exposing the collective blind spots embedded in cognitive models. The exhibition uses the failure of dual archives as a metaphor: 831 AI-generated 2x2-inch passport photos, depicting anonymous human backs, face off against a U.S. occupational wage report engulfed in black. Together, they form an equation of technological rationality and human experience—visible yet unreadable, real yet unsolvable.
